Use high temp grease (not copper) and coat it liberally. I stuck some in the hole too then wiped off the excess...

I have just switched to this, you can hit it directly with a pressure washer and it shrugs it off! Using it on door hinges, and pins locks, exposed bolt threads. It's actually very very good stuff!
My fourth MX - 5, after two NB's and an NC, now got a 184BHP ND!

Nice. Might get some of that. I've previously tried and failed to find red rubber grease. Not tried hard enough, I guess.

I got mine from eBay. About £9.
I've discovered the hard way that copper grease causes rubber to swell.
