Thanks. It was indeed that main relay! Have ordered a new one and in the mean time got the jumper in. Thank you very much for your help!

Thanks for the suggestion, upon inspection the plastic surrounding one of the main relay connections is browned and slightly melted. Which two of the four relay connectors do I need to jump without blowing a fuse?...

Thanks rich. It's a 1.8 94. Can get the fuel pump running now with the bypass but the engine won't start. Cranks fine. Will check the ignition wiring.

Forgot to add that when I re-install a relay bypass straight to the battery everything works great
