In Topic: Mx5 Head - Dropped A Stem Seal Into The Hole Between The Valves!

27 September 2020 - 07:54 PM

Hi all,

Thanks for the replied, I left this for sometime and tried lots of way to fish this out without any luck.

I do think the engine has had it anyway, so I'm not overly concerned tbh, although saying this after everything was put back together there was a loud concerning knocking noise, it doesn't matter as this didn't fix the underlying issue of oil control rings.

But for everyone here is a nice video of I think the bottom end getting chewed up, correct me if I'm wrong. This is after having the cams out and replacing the valve stem seals - it could well be something else, maybe timing is not correctly set or where the car hasn't been turned on in 3 months oil starvation, who knows.

Sure it's not just the lifters?

Can be all out of oil if you've removed them.

Magnetic pick-up tool?

Bernard

Are they not (mostly) some sort of neoprene plastic?

I'm thinking as mentioned the wire coathanger, with maybe  blob of Tiger Seal or summat on the end of it..let it set, and...well...good luck.

There is some metal in them, a little wire collar around the top to hold it against the stem and the body has some kind of metal in it as well.

Stem seals are also a problem, what with the age of Mk1's.

You can do the valve stem seals in-situ, probs best to start there.

When you did the headgasket did you skim the head and check the block?
