Right... I'm getting there at last!! The one last issue with this car is the stinky seats. They're not THAT bad... but after a drive, from day 1 of owning this car, there's a mould smell DEEP in the seats. I must've spent £40 over time with every attempt to neutralise the smell, but I give up. Game over.

So..... this happened!

50194464353_5797b2eb43_b.jpg

50194464188_99032e6f8f_b.jpg

50195276167_2a9dd3f3a5_b.jpg

They're custom trimmed in full grain leather, double stitched, embroidered logos. Came from a silver Mk2.5 Sport just like mine... NO SMELL ON THEM!!! My son gets what he wanted here too.... heated seats. He loves those.

They've been re foamed too - WAY more supportive than OE and softer too. REALLY lovely. No idea where they were trimmed as I bought off a breaker in Gumtree. Came from England on a pallet. Delighted!

A few final gifts from 4 years of neglect and a garage where they tipped all my parts inside the car... my armrest got scratched up. Time for a new one and time to get the carbon fibre shift knob fitted that my son bought me 5 years ago!!!

50195012716_dee2ab3c26_b.jpg

50195012556_0eee3369c4_b.jpg

The finished job... and only £26 delivered!! Great service from http://pmsportscars.com/ and great that they dont rip the arm in for postage. £6 for a console from mainland to NI was fantastic value.

50195275922_2fe0e91c97_b.jpg

And finally... a close up of that lovely carbon knob. I searched a long time to get a carbon knob with the 6 speed shift pattern on it. Bonus that the text is silver!

Last update for now. I'd fitted silver/clear reflectors a long time back but never really liked them that much. Not on a silver car. Front was ok.. but not the rear. So, lets try red:

BEFORE:

50147441731_12d5729cd7_b.jpg

AFTER:

50195354342_00b06555e8_b.jpg

Yup. I like that better!

Had a good 20 mile scalp in the car today. Those MeisterR's are FANTASTIC. They're more comfortable than the original Bilsteins, yet great at speed on the corners. I started at the recommended -15F, -20R (starting full hard and softening back). That was too wallowy so I added +5 to each axle. ie. -10F, -15R. Perfect. I could go a BIT harder... but some of our B roads are awful.

I'm running IL Motorsport bushes on the rebuilt rear, originals on the front. I think I've gone as far as I can before re-bushing the front and then considering stiffer anti-roll bars.

Next on my to-do list is front pads (green stuff to match the rears) and braided hoses. I'm meeting corners a lot faster than before and that brake pedal is a bit mushy.

Glad I stuck with this wee car.... its put a smile right back on my face again!!

Brill threat.  Thanks for keeping it alive.

Thanks even more for not giving up.  Got to page 4 and it looked like game over.  Very happy to see someone else trying to save a 5, as against break it and scrap it.

Thanks for that! Been out in it EVERY dry day since it got back on the road. Finding I go out now, just to drive. Can't recommend the chassis rails, Meisters, GFC cage highly enough - together, they've really transformed the handling.

However, it now shows up the parts of the car that need to keep up!

Next in the to-do list:

This coming year - Green stuff pads up front to match the rears. Braided brake lines - the pedal isnt hard enough.

Longer term - I'm going to source a front subframe and arms and start to work at a set of those with the "POR15" treatment. IL motorsport bushes all over to match the rear again. I'd like the front end to be a bit sharper. Not sure if alignment could maybe be dialled in better to achieve that? Its getting to the stage I'd probably need /to be on track to safely find out! Been on the Racing Beat website and fancy one of their uprated front anti roll bars with associated bracketing etc.

I guess the most immediate job in hand is to clear my messy garage out! 4 years with no MX5 in it has, well, taken its toll. Need to clear it out before the weather turns.

Finally - ICE. Going to start with a speaker upgrade and see what that does for the pathetic sound of the OE radio! Android auto is on the horizon after that... although I do want to run Torque pro on screen, so I'll have to investigate that and see how to achieve it. Can't have enough dials! Alternative is to put some proper gauges in... we'll see.

Ace, keep us posted.
You’ve pretty much sold me on the Meisters. Just done the chassis rails on mine, so I’ll leave the suspension as next years project.

Ref the audio, be aware that you can put 8”!drivers in the doors. I put a pair of Focal ISU120s in mine

Coming on nicely. You've mentioned put green stuff pads on. I run the yellow stuff on mine and find them excellent with much more bite compared to the OE pads. Green stuff won't generate as much dust, but they also won't brake as hard.

Ben

Yeah - I've green stuff pads on the rear... mind you... there'e LOADS of dust off them compared to the OE front pads. Brakes feel like they're at 70% of what I'd like to feel. I guess I'll just have to do the front pads first, then maybe braid the lines and see how the pedal feels. Beyond that.... its as you say, yellow stuff perhaps, for more bite.

Either way, haven't had this much fun since my bike days. Happy enough with power levels too. Our roads here are nice n twisty although I suspect a supercharger would add some poke without changing the dynamic of the car. Big money to cross that line... so I'll stick to chassis/brake work for now.

Not as expensive as you'd think, you can pick a mini M45 up really cheap (under £100), and there are bracket kits for under £200 which you weld up yourself. DIY-EFI are bringing out a PnP mk2 ECU which should be about the £250 range so that's most of the key items sorted.

I'm worried about messing up what it a 100% reliable platform. I've a specialist tuner not far from here who said he'd take a FI kit from me and install/setup. I don't mind tinkering, but think adding boost is probably a good way for me to kill a decent car if I DIY it! Anyway, it'll be a while before I get to that decision. Plenty to do on the font end over the next year or 2.

Lesson learned though - I'm going to buy a front subframe and arms and have them painted, bushed and ready to hand over for fitting. No more mucking about with the car in bits for years.

It should be ok. There are plenty of threads on here about adding FI, have a read, familarise yourself and it wont seem so daunting.

No platform is 100% reliable, you add more power and you increase the risk of things breaking, it's just the way it goes. But all the limits are known and there's so much info about FI for mx5s it's easy to stay below them.
