Is it just me or does everyone's radio stick out of the dash? I have quite big hands and occasionally I find myself punching the radio when changing gear and turning it on/off

I don't know if there's a way of fitting my current radio more flush with the dash, or if there is a different radio that fits flush rather than sticking out?

 

I know that some JDM tombstones had a recessed area for the radio, and that some OEM radios seem to fit a lot flusher than mine!

I've just had a new double din fitted, Pioneer, and it looks almost OEM. I can't do pictures these days, but I'll try later on.

thanks, that looks good like you say almost factory    Ironically I have just found out that I have been driving around for the last year with my gearstick fitted 180 degrees round the wrong way so I'm just about to change that and see if I still bash the radio (turns out it was leaning forward not back!) I will keep looking though as my radio still looks like it sticks out too much!

I always fit radios flush and shave down the clip-on plastic trim surround so it fills the gap. Bit of a hassle but looks good.

How do you do that? by fitting the cage further into the toombstone?

I don't use the cage and don't fix the radio to the tombstone.  I just copied the way my first Roadster's stock double-DIN radio/CD was mounted, with side brackets holding it to the structure behind the tombstone. 

 

Actually, I cut and folded a new bracket from thin aluminium sheet.  Two sides, joined by a piece across the middle which goes under and supports the back of the radio, and folded over ears at the front which screw to either side.  Radios seem to have standard M4 holes in the side so I've been able to use the same bracket for multiple radios over the years and brought the bracket from that first car to its replacement.

I've got practically the same head unit and an early NA car and I got rid of the trim, painted the metal cage black and got a more flush look. There's still some gap around the side of the stereo but it's alot less naff than the 'surround' it came with.

its because of the detachable fascia no? there are some nice flush fit car radios,

 

i like these continental radios for an oem look, i got one for my 80s merecedes and it was cheap also

Too many buttons, IMO. 

 

It's subjective of course but, like remote controls and microwave ovens, I don't like stuff with lots of buttons I never use and have forgotten what they do.  Especially in a car, controls should be simple, tactile and not fiddly.

As luck would have it, one of these just arrived from eBay Germany this week along with a left hand drive version of the BMW cubby clock to go underneath it.  Not fitted them yet but the radio looks really nicely made and very OEM. Going to try and find some time this weekend to install them :-)

 

That Blaupunkt looks nice and retro but £450 !
