It'll be on rokkors and splits already :) Maybe with the nutz influx of calls he decided to look into its origins and will put it up for sale in a couple of weeks x4 the original price.

It would be good if it's on nutz but i hope that they knew what they got, i don't want the owner not to know what it is then in 5-10 years time they scrap it for rusty sills as they think it is worth nothing or exactly what AndyK said, slammed and rolled arches using a scaffolding pole and generally just being used as a drfit slag.

I am certain they knew what they were getting - hence why they turned up at opening time with a pocket full of cash. I have a suspicion as to who bought it but will wait to see if it's true...

These cars fetch uber money in Japan. It would be more profitable to ship back there and sell at an auction...

Missing the numbered plaque by the passenger door. There should also be a M2 plaque in the engine bay.

Looks genuine considering all the other parts (including the rare seats).


That sounds like the Car Planet car; plaque was missing because the passenger side had been stoved in, and a standard door fitted. Rollbar had gone walkies (dealer claimed it was still with the owner in Japan), dealer had thrown out the paperwork "because people ask too many questions". It was on Dunlop slicks, and the drivers seat frame was cracked, which is what happens when you stuff it into the Armco. Oh, and it wouldn't idle all that well. had a Ford Sierra gear knob at the time, and half the interior trim missing, as Car Planet had obviously sent it to the body shop to get the passenger side sorted out. A major MX5 parts supplier, who pretty much supplied all the trade with MX5 parts, said to me it was probably a pretty good outcome that I didn't buy the car, knowing what he knew about the dealer. Back in 2004, that car was up for sale for £7k, and all the dealer would give me for my mint 91 car in p/ex was £800. 12 months later, I sold my 140k 91 for £3500.

So the 1001 was a Grade R; a bullet missed.

M2-1001s are still going through the auctions in Japan; I saw a fairly decent one go for £5k recently, and it will be miles better than this car. My old M2-1002, after Sam Goodwin had restored it, and then sold it, is apparently in a bad way, after the engine ran out of oil, and the owner decided to use it as a commuter car. :cry: I knew I should have gotten that car back from Sam. Thought it had been acquired by an enthusiast.

After reviewing the photos in the ad, and the original carplanet ad from 2004, 100% its the same car. Only carplanet were advertising it as a K-reg (and I swear it had a K-plate on when I looked at it), now its on a M-reg. I had strange vibes about the car, and was warned off by someone in the trade who queried how they were buying cars.

It seems the owners were in hock to the mob.

I think if you were buying this car to restore, the butchers bill will be rather higher than you think, rectifying all the previous damage, as well as sorting out the bumper damage. I wouldn't be surprised if the engine was in a bad way, or it had been replaced with an ordinary MX5 engine. It took £7k to restore my 1002......(a task that was way beyond me).

I did think it may be the Car Planet one too Andy, am feeling slightly better that I didnt get it now. I'll stick with my S-Ltd, it has most of the nice bits a M2-1001 has anyway, including the dials/gauges!......

DVLA has the car registered 19 12 2005, but I viewed the car in the summer of 2004........
