After recently relocating from Australia, I was keen to sacrifice the HP and get into a sub-1000kg car that can turn and stop to use for track days in the UK. I ditched the Ford Ka commuter (after a very, very brief consideration to use that!) and decided an MX5 was the way to go. It had to get me to work and back too so I wanted something common and reliable.

After much painful searching and narrowly missing out on MX5s for sale I came across one that a bloke from work decided to clear a hedge with. It was a perfect base as a 1994 Eunos 1.8 S-Special that was a Cat C due to bent front wings and bumper, damaged headlight, damaged tyre and some dents here and there. The car was well taken care of and has plenty of receipts over the last 7 years.

It was at this stage that a mate who had just garaged his Ford Racing Puma decided he wanted to pitch in and use it at track days too. We drive together on a daily basis and are similar levels of skill so the friendly competition keeps the times down! With more funds and an extra pair of hands we got to it.

So after parting with a small amount of money I towed the car home:

Posted Image

Got it up on a ramp in the wash bay to clean off the nature:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

First thing was to get a new T1R to replace the damaged one, luckily the tyres weren’t that old so a new one wasn’t out of place. Pre MOT & VIC check we changed the knackered front wings for some straight ones (stonechip area touched up):

Posted Image

Posted Image

New wings on the car ready for MOT:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Passed the MOT, no advisories:

Posted Image

Now to crack on with the fun stuff! Interior stripped:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

A/C fully removed:

Posted Image

New parts stacking up, GRP seats:

Posted Image

Gaz Gold Pro (400lb Front, 300lb Rear):

Posted Image

Mk2 top mounts, Genuine front discs, aftermarket rear discs, Mintex fast road rear pads:

Posted Image

HEL braided lines, Mintex 1144 racing front pads:

Posted Image

Full set of new damper rubbers prior to cutting(!):

Posted Image

Pair of Luke 4-point harnesses:

Posted Image

First thing was to get the GRP seats mounted to the floor, therefore the subframes needed some tweeking. Locator lugs removed and mounts bent horizontal; before:

Posted Image

And after, mounted to the seats:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Mounted in the car:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Car then went off to WT Motorsport for a bespoke cage:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Car then re-stripped and prepped for painting:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Painted black:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Seats padded:

Posted Image

Then to fit the brakes, suspension, braided lines and to flush the brake fluid. Discs painted up in the paint booth!?:

Posted Image

Car up in the air for the big switch out:

Posted Image

Standard springs and dampers out (what a pig of a job) and Gaz in:

Posted Image

Front fully built up:

Posted Image

Rear completed:

Posted Image

How the car then looked:

Posted Image

Next was to tidy up the doors with some 3mm Perspex, pictures speak for themselves:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

The car was then ready for its first run @ Abingdon airfield. Was a largely positive run, however an unfortunate off road excursion left the rear subframe slightly bent:

Posted Image

As a precaution this was swapped out:

Posted Image

At the same time the car was stickered up: (Note the Godzilla theme comes from a nickname I got slapped with over here due to a funny photo of me in Japan. Basically it revolves around the fact I am 6'7")

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Car then corner weighted and geometry set:

Posted Image

Posted Image

We then took the car to Rockingham for another run last weekend. It went great and is very rewarding to drive. The T1-Rs come on well once they are warm but still feel a little soft in the sidewalls.

I will put a link to trackphotos.co.uk once they are up

Next things to do are more weight savings, Yokohama Paradas, oil change, possibly CAI and then to the Ring on June 11th. Will we make it back???

Really great build there!

Loving the diy door cards, so much better than bare metal.

I REALLY need to see some pics of you sat in the car though. 6ft7 :o

Brilliant build! +1 for seeing a picture of you sat in it as i want to see how low you got the seats without taking the 'bumps' out of the floor.

Also I would give your camera to the police as it appears to be on hallucinogenic drugs :D

Cheers guys. I'll get a pic of me in/climbing in it tomorrow for comedy purposes. And the lumps have been removed from the floor. The seats basically touch the floor on the base and also the rear bulkhead. You sit comically low in the car.

The humps will have been taken out if the mount is straight?

Ps. I forgot to mention about the swirly bits :P ^

Thanks Matt. I was pretty pissed when I missed your car but I recovered. And I would have felt bad about ripping it apart like this one!

I should have said earlier- big kudos to Rob for all the help building (and bending?) the car. It wouldnt have happened on my own.
Also to:
Adam for the endless supply of stickers, shirts, grab handles and of course the godzilla theme. You have skills!
Simon and Roy at WT Motorsport for the cage and general fab parts. What amazing service.
The Nerve Centre
And of course the wife for clearing the funds and putting up with me away from home for about 6 weekends straight. The 'I love you' sticker is going on real soon I promise...

I know it's only a quick, cheap build but it was fun.

Couple of updates...

Stripped, repaired and painted the wheels tangerine orange, complete with new Enkei decals (still sorting centre caps). Back on the car with Yokohama Parada Spec-2's:

Wheel looks tiny! I've got a 330 on mine and it restricts the dials, must be even worse on yours! Looks good though.

Loving the bonnet sticker B)

Does nobody else want to know what's hidden behind all of those swirl marks?

The wheel does restrict visibility of the dials. But who cares?? ;)

The swirl marks cover cars and items that are 'visually sensitive'. ie I am not allowed to post on the internet!

That makes sense. Oh man, my car came with a tiny wheel and I couldn't see anything between 40 and 70mph on the speedo. I hated it and swapped it with my housemate for his Nardi...each to their own though, he loves the smaller wheel. They're definitely more fun.

This isn't that bad. Because you sit so low in the car you can still see the important stuff. This is what I see (6'7")

Next up was to fix the wimpy front end (and hopefully gain an aero advantage!?), so we decided to fabricate a front air dam and one piece splitter / under tray from 6mm marine ply and .75mm aluminium sheeting.

Inevitably this started quite crudely, but the intention was to create a dam that would permit a level under tray to be secured to the front subframe:

Posted Image
Posted Image

Close enough, so transferred this rough idea to the aluminium and began fettling that:
Posted Image

Finished guise:
Posted Image

Next was the under tray / splitter, shaped to allow for 20mm wheel clearance at full droop (worst case scenario):
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Finished items ready for paint:
Posted Image

Painted and installed using riv-nuts and stainless steel button head fixings (note- black centre caps and tow hooks):
