Here's one to get you thinking. Interested to know what others would do in the following situation.

You're driving on a dual carriageway in the inside lane at 70mph. A car catches up with you but instead of overtaking they just decide to sit behind you. You become uncomfortable with how close they are so you ease off the throttle to encourage them to overtake. They still don't overtake you and are now just driving closer than before.

What's your next move?

put it in 3rd, foot down, and give them some oil smell from the exhaust

or keep slowing down without using brakes to under 50mph and indicate left/put hazards on

Try and remember if you've put that pool cue / baseball bat / iron bar back in the boot?

Hope you have it fixed to the centre line and as far forward as poss so you don't upset the delicate balance of your finely tuned motor.

Just keep driving at the speed you want to, if it intimidates you exit at the next junction or services for 5 min and rejoin.
What you describe has happened to me once or twice in 30 years of driving. Get a dashcam as well if you don't have one.

Watch out for the Blue Flashing Light to appear.

Pull into layby and let them pass,

Switch to the outside lane to keep a safe seperation.

Get your passenger to take a nice piccy of them.

Play left foot brakesy to flash the brake lights while pulling away in fourth or third.

Start a bit of Zig Zag to see if they notice you are actually in front of them.

If its a Vauxhall Zafira Bratmobile driven by Female get the hell out of the way.

I am sure you will get some even more Serious Answers soon. !!!!!! :D

Oh I forgot the 1960s mod to inject paraffin into the exhaust and smoke the buggers out.

It worked for James Bond.

Happened to me a couple of times in past 20 years. I do the same as I witnessed my Dad doing when I was a teenager. Foot off loud pedal, clutch in, drop to 2nd ready, clutch still in, hazards on...soon find out if they are following you or not. If they slow down with you, let it drop to to 30....then floor it.

In another similar situation, I had a similar circumstance on the A66 - the road was full of snow and snowing heavy. Had person right behind me in my tracks.... as it happened he was jsut a nervous driver in the snow and was keeping in tag with me. I found this out as I stopped, he stopped so I got out...turns out it was an old fella. So I kept a sensible 25mph until we reach Scotch Corner. I stopped again...went to speak to him.... he gave me a a card with the name of a pub in Yorkshire.... turns out he owned it. Said if I ever come there it's free drinks for me every time :)

The last time it happened to me... I had this idiot tailgaiting me right up close. As I was in town, I decided to try a few turns to make sure...sure enough, he was on my arse. So I drove...........to the police station and pulled in the entrance, then jumped out the car as if to approach him. His face was a picture, he floored it and off he went... :)

This happens to me occasionally when I'm driving around deepest darkest Essex sometimes on night shift. It's always on empty unlit roads, I've come to the conclusion that some people are either afraid of the dark or have poor night vision and they just stick to your arse so they don't have to squint through the windscreen trying to work out what is happening ahead. Pretty fucking annoying as their headlights in all your mirrors ruins your own night vision.
Just speed off, hold back the stick for full beam flash and turn off your lights - Stealth mode engaged.

i do think people are reluctant to overtake as they don't want your headflights glaring in their mirrors when they go past

irony being they're doing exactly that to you

Not tailgating but close to a crash this evening on my 100 mile weekly trip to work digs.  Motorway had all sorts of lane closures with massive X's denoting which lanes can be used.  A slight diversion and back on the motorway with the 3 normal lanes with NSL signs on them and the hardshoulder with a massive X.  Cruse control on at the speed limit.  I'm in lane one, taxi is on the hard shoulder which I'm catching up to, no cars in front or behind me and nothing on the hard shoulder.  The complete and utter toss pot decided that he'd been driving on the hardshoulder incorrectly for long enough and decided without indicating to pull into lane 1 as I'm as close as can be. I really hope he had passengers as they would have shit themselves at the near collision with me firmly on the horn.

A policeman would have reason to do this. Foul as it may be.  Or perhaps another 5 driver.

What era were the headlights from. That can be telling
